Back to November 2022 News Update

Safe Work Australia consists of representatives from the Commonwealth and each state and territory, employer and employee organisations as well as the Chair and CEO of the Safe Work Australia Agency. Our Membership ensures effective, tripartite consultation and cooperation at the national level and that WHS and workers’ compensation policy is balanced and appropriate for everyone.

Our Members are supported by an independent, Commonwealth statutory agency (Safe Work Australia) of around 100 people with diverse qualifications and experience including occupational hygienists, chemists, economists, data analysts, regulatory lawyers as well as policy experts from a range of backgrounds to support our work program.

This expertise and support is important as Safe Work Australia Members are required to consider and decide complex policy issues and legislative reform matters on work health and safety and workers’ compensation. The Agency provides Members with data and research, legal and policy advice and other briefing to enable them to decide on matters of national importance.

Did you know decisions about the model WHS legislation require a two-thirds majority and a majority of the Members who represent the Commonwealth, states and territories? Matters not relating to the model WHS legislation or model Codes of Practice are decided by a two-thirds majority.
