Review of the engineered stone prohibition

WHS ministers tasked Safe Work Australia with reviewing the engineered stone ban, which came into effect on 1 July 2024. 

The review examined whether the ban was operating effectively, identified any unintended consequences, and assessed health risks for workers when processing stone products that may or may not contain crystalline silica. Overall, the review found that the engineered stone ban is operating as intended, while noting that implementation is still in its early stages.

As part of the review, Safe Work Australia commissioned a feasibility study into the composition, emissions, and potential health risks of engineered, ceramic and natural stone. The research provides early insights into the composition and potential health risks of various stone products and reinforces the need to continue managing work health and safety risks associated with processing all types of stone materials.
