This resource provides plain English guidance for persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), such as employers, to assist them to understand and comply with their duties as they relate to the workplace exposure limits (WEL).
It provides practical, best practice guidance on applying the WEL to protect Australian workers from unsafe exposure to airborne contaminants.
It is structured to provide easily accessible answers to common questions about air monitoring, and to walk employers through the process of determining if air monitoring is required, engaging a competent person to do air monitoring and what to do after air monitoring is complete.
From 1 December 2026, this guide and the Technical guide: Air monitoring and the workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants replace the Guidance on the interpretation of Workplace exposure standards for airborne contaminants.
