AI and digital technologies are used in most Australian workplaces in a range of different ways. They can create both work health and safety (WHS) opportunities and risks.
Digital technologies refer to a wide range of digital hardware and software. Some examples that may be used at work include:
- computers,
- mobile phones,
- software and applications,
- security and safety technologies,
- wearable devices, and
- advanced robotics and automation.
AI is an umbrella term, encompassing a range of predictive software that can perform tasks previously requiring human intelligence. Common examples of AI used in workplaces include machine learning algorithms and Generative AI.
When introducing and using AI and digital technologies in the workplace, persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) must manage the associated WHS risks in the same way they would any other WHS risk. That is, PCBUs must eliminate risks, or if that is not reasonably practicable, minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable by implementing control measures.
Implementing new digital technologies or changing existing AI or digital technologies at work (including routine changes to IT systems, or updates “pushed” or initiated by software providers) may introduce or change WHS risks. In some instances, AI and digital technologies can provide opportunities to improve how WHS risks are managed. However, they can also create challenges which if not addressed can introduce new or increase existing WHS risks.
For example, some AI and digital technologies allow for the automation of routine tasks. However, if implemented poorly, this can lead to work intensification from a greater proportion of more complex tasks, which increases the risk of fatigue.
