Safe Work Australia is undertaking a comprehensive review of the model WHS asbestos framework, including the model WHS Regulations, Codes of Practice, guidance and the model WHS Act where relevant. This review aims to identify opportunities to strengthen asbestos risk control and management, and to prioritise asbestos removal. Public consultation will be conducted to inform this review. Please visit our Asbestos Framework Review Consultation Hub for more information.

Breathing in asbestos fibres can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

If there is any asbestos in your workplace, you must manage the risks. This includes keeping an asbestos register and having an asbestos management plan

To remove asbestos, you need special training and a licence.

Construction work involving, or likely to involve, the disturbance of asbestos is considered high risk construction work. The interactive safe work method statement (SWMS) tool provides information on preparing, using and reviewing SWMS for high risk construction work.
