Australia uses the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) to classify and label chemicals.

From 1 January 2021, Australia began the transition from GHS 3 to GHS 7 for workplace hazardous chemicals. The transition period is for two years and will end on 31 December 2022.

This information sheet explains the changes between GHS 3 and GHS 7, including:

  • requirements for labels and safety data sheets

  • additional hazard categories and classes

  • updates to precautionary statements.

It will be useful for people who classify hazardous chemicals for use in the workplace.

This document is part of a collection about our transition to GHS 7.
