These reports are produced annually to provide national statistics on all workers and bystanders fatally injured through work-related activity. This data draws on a range of information sources, including:
- initial reporting of fatalities in the media or on relevant authority websites such as police, road authorities and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau
- notifications from the jurisdictional authorities, and
- the National Coronial Information System which provides confidential access to coroners’, police and other investigative reports.
This data is regularly reviewed and figures may be revised as additional information becomes available. Time series information should therefore only be accessed from the latest report. Historical reports also included commuter fatalities (workers that died while commuting to or from work), which are no longer included.
