These reports are produced annually to provide national statistics on all workers and bystanders fatally injured at work. This data draws on a range of information sources, including:
- initial reporting of fatalities in the media or on relevant authority websites such as police, road authorities and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau
- notifications from the jurisdictional authorities, and
- the National Coronial Information Service which provides confidential access to coroners’, police and other investigative reports.
Reports prior to 2017 included commuter fatalities (workers that died while commuting to or from work). These fatalities are no longer included.
Data is constantly reviewed and estimates may increase as more information is found to identify a death as work-related. Time series information should therefore only be accessed from the latest report.
