It oversampled workers from the five priority industries for work health and safety under the National OHS Strategy 2002–2012. Workers were asked about their exposure to a number of occupational disease-causing hazards and the provision of control measures. The nine hazards examined in this study were: noise, vibration, airborne hazards, sun, skin contact with chemicals, wet work, biological materials, biomechanical demands and job demands. Eight reports on individual hazards from the NHEWS survey have been published on the Safe Work Australia website. The current study looked at exposure to multiple hazards.</p> <h2>Main Findings</h2> <p>Over 60 per cent of workers reported that they were exposed to multiple disease-causing hazards in their workplaces.</p> <p>On average, workers reported exposure to 2.6 hazards. However, males reported exposure to an average of 3.0 hazards while females reported exposure to 2.1 hazards. Technicians &amp; trades workers and workers in the Agriculture, forestry &amp; fishing industry had the highest average self- reported exposure to hazards, 3.8 and 3.7 hazards respectively. These findings partly reflect that most of the hazards included in the NHEWS survey were hazards found in male dominated, blue collar occupations. The average number of hazard exposures also declined with age.</p> <p>One in ten workers reported exposure to six or more hazards. The proportions of workers with exposure to six of more hazards differed by industry and occupation (Figure 1).</p> <p>We also looked at co-exposure to noise and vibration and co-exposure to airborne hazards and skin contact with chemicals. For both types of exposures, the likelihood of exposure varied by age, gender, working hours, industry and occupation. Type of education was a predictor of co-exposure to noise and vibration but not for co-exposure to airborne hazards and chemicals. Workplace size was a predictor of co-exposure to airborne hazards and chemicals.</p> <p>About 8 per cent of workers with co-exposure to noise and vibration and 4 per cent of workers with co-exposure to airborne hazards and chemicals reported that they were not provided with any control measures for these hazards.</p> <p>Figure 1. Percentage of workers reporting exposure to six or more hazards in the NHEWS survey by industry and occupation (only top 8 industries presented)</p> <p><img alt="Figure 1 Percentage of workers reporting exposure to six or more hazards in the NHEWS survey by industry and occupation" src="/sites/SWA/about/Publications/PublishingImages/brief-exposure-figure.jpg" /></p> <h2>Key Messages</h2> <p>Self-reported exposure to multiple hazards was common. This highlights the need to consider the whole range of potential hazards in the workplace when conducting risk assessment and risk management activities.</p> <p>Young workers were more likely to be exposed to multiple disease-causing hazards. Younger workers with higher exposures were not limited to those in lower skilled jobs. This suggests that younger workers may be assigned to tasks with higher exposures as found in other studies and highlights the importance of equipping young workers with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves at work.</p> <p>An executive summary and the full report from which this brief is drawn from can be found at Safe Work Australia website.</p> </div> <div class="field-downloads"> <h2 class="field__label">Downloads</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-document-info field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--document-info paragraph--view-mode--swa-document-first-item"> <ul class="document-tiles direct-dl-files row"> <li class="field field--name-field-file-information field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items col-sm-4"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--file-information paragraph--view-mode--swa-document-full-view"> <a href="/system/files/documents/1702/exposure-to-multiple-hazards-research-brief.pdf" title="exposure-to-multiple-hazards-research-brief.pdf" class="tile type-pdf"><div class="document-icon"></div> <p class="link-type"><span class="visually-hidden">exposure-to-multiple-hazards-research-brief.pdf</span> PDF</p> <p class="file-size">163.35 KB</p> <div class="file-meta"></div> </a> </div> </div> </li> </ul> <div class="field field--name-field-publication-date field--type-datetime field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Publication date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2015-02-10T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">10 Feb 2015</time> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-document-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Document type</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/170" hreflang="en">Reports</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-category field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Tag by Category</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/28" hreflang="en">Research and studies</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tag-by-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Tag by Topic</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/82" hreflang="en">Hazard surveillance research</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 19 Mar 2020 11:13:53 +0000 Hazard surveillance research Exposure to multiple hazards among Australian workers https://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/doc/exposure-multiple-hazards-among-australian-workers <div class="node node--type-document node--view-mode-rss layout layout--onecol"> <div class="layout__region layout__region--content"> <div class="field field-overview"> <div class="field__label">Overview</div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>This report summarises the research findings for self-reported exposure to multiple hazards from the 2008 National Hazard Exposure Worker Surveillance (NHEWS) Survey. The AWES data were analysed to provide specific information on exposures to PAHs.</p> <h2>Who was exposed?</h2> <p>About six per cent of workers who participated in the AWES were likely to be exposed to PAHs at work. About forty percent of these workers worked in the Agriculture industry.</p> <p><strong>Table: Occupations of AWES respondents likely to be exposed to PAHs</strong></p> <table summary="A total of 297 AWES respondents were likely to be exposed to PAHs. could expose them to carcinogens. The AWES data were analysed to provide specific information on exposures to formaldehyde.</p> <h2>Who was exposed?</h2> <p>About three per cent of workers who participated in the AWES were likely to be exposed to formaldehyde at work. About half of these workers were employed in the Construction industry and more than half were technicians and trades persons.</p> <p>Table: Occupations of AWES respondents likely to be exposed to formaldehyde</p> <table summary="A total of 124 AWES respondents were likely to be exposed to formaldehyde. Exposures were assessed as medium if medical equipment was sterilised in an auto clave but exposures were assessed as high if open systems were used.</p> <h2>How were workers preventing exposures?</h2> <p>Information on the use of controls to prevent exposures was not collected from all respondents. About 61% of respondents from whom this information was collected reported regularly using respiratory protection or working in areas with area or local exhaust ventilation. However, paper masks used by some respondents may not have been adequate to protect against all potential formaldehyde exposures.</p> <p>Only about 40% of carpenters who use power tools when working with particle board were considered to use control measures appropriately when the type of ventilation or respiratory protection and the frequency of use was considered.</p> <h2 tabindex="-1">Limitations</h2> <p>The AWES is a population-based survey which does not specifically examine workers in industries like formaldehyde-based resin manufacturing or particle board manufacturing where some exposures might be high.</p> <h2 tabindex="-1">Key messages</h2> <p>Most workers exposed to formaldehyde will not develop cancer from these exposures but they have an increased risk of doing so.<br /> Many exposures to formaldehyde can be prevented using controls to prevent exposures like:</p> <ul> <li>installing and using ventilation systems where practicable, and</li> <li>using power tools fitted with ‘on-tool’ dust and vapour extraction systems when working with particle board or plywood.</li> </ul> <p>Preventative efforts should initially focus on encouraging employers and workers to use simple, readily available controls to prevent workplace exposures.</p> <h2 tabindex="-1">More information</h2> <p>An executive summary and the full report which this brief is drawn from can be found at <a href="/node/1167">Australian Work Exposures Study (AWES) - Some exposed workers worked at or used indoor firing ranges.</p> <h2>What were the exposure assessments?</h2> <p>Exposure levels were assessed as being high or medium for most tasks. Exposures during soldering activities and sanding or stripping old lead paint before painting were considered high because controls like ventilation or respiratory protective equipment were reported as not being used.<br /> Exposures when plumbing, fire-fighting or machining lead-plated metals or lead alloys should be low when controls are used but control use was not always reported.<br /> Exposures when repairing radiators or during mining operations were considered high but information on the use of controls was not available.</p> <h2>Limitations</h2> <p>The AWES is a population-based survey which does not specifically examine workers in industries like battery recycling or lead smelting where exposures are likely to be high.</p> <h2>Key messages</h2> <p>Most workers exposed to lead will not develop cancer from these exposures but they have an increased risk of doing so.<br /> Many of the reported exposures to lead can be prevented using lead-free alternatives and known controls to prevent exposures to lead like:</p> <ul> <li>using soldering booths or ventilation when soldering, or</li> <li>using power sanders fitted with dust collectors when sanding.</li> </ul>
