Pure pentachlorophenol (PCP; CAS 87-86-5) is a colourless or white, needle-like crystal. Commercial grade PCP (86% purity) is a dark grey to brown solid with a phenolic, pungent smell.

Examples of work activities involving PCP that require special attention when assessing exposure include workers who:

  • handle or process wood that has been preserved with PCP
  • work near preserved wood processes
