Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) (CAS 108-10-1) is a colourless, flammable liquid with a sweet odour that is moderately soluble in water. MIBK is used in the manufacturing of paints, rubbers, pharmaceuticals and cleaners. It is used in the semiconductor industry and is effective at dissolving resins and surface coatings.

The major uses of MIBK are:

  • solvent for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, lacquers and nitrocellulose
  • alcohol denaturant
  • extraction of rare metals
  • synthetic flavouring adjuvant
  • viscosity adjuster
  • extraction solvent in the synthesis and purification of drugs
