What is Safe Work Australia Week
National Safe Work Australia Week is held annually in October to focus attention on workplace safety. The week aims to encourage all working Australians to get involved in, and concentrate on, safety in their workplace to reduce death, injury and disease.
Safe Work Australia Week is a key initiative of Safe Work Australia. Now in its fifth year, the week will be celebrated from 25 - 31 October 2009.
This year national Safe Work Australia Week will focus on the harmonisation of occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.
You can read more about the model OHS legislation and how you can get involved.
WORKPLACE SAFETY: THE FACTS
Over 135 000 Australians are seriously injured at work every year and more than 260 die as a result of work-related injuries.
The total economic cost of work-related injuries and illnesses to the Australian economy for the 2005-2006 financial year is estimated at $57.5 billion, representing 5.9 per cent of GDP.
The tragedy is that work-related injury, illness and death can be prevented through the adoption of safer work practices.
Safe Work Australia Week reminds us all that safety in the workplace is a priority.
