Safety Ambassador Suzanne Johns
Background information
Born in Beaconsfield in Tasmania and parents were both factory workers I was made aware of danger at an early age, and yes I know Todd Russel but only through marriage.
I worked in the mining industry for 3 years and working on a mine site you have to be aware of your surroundings and always be on the look out for any problems. I was quite surprised at the laid back attitude of some of the other workers, I have seen a few injuries that could quite easily have been avoided by following the safety procedures and this made me be more determined to do safety and make it safe for others too…I believe we all deserve a safe working environment & I felt as though I owed it to my self and my family but also my work mates then I realized we all are responsible for workplace safety not just me and this realisation spurred me on and made me more passionate to do more with safety…so here I am now at Bunning’s where we have forklifts, waves, trucks,& people all mixed together!
So everyone has to be aware of everything around them.
This company is very passionate about every one’s safety so I felt as though fitted in very well, I am very lucky that they let me…well … be me!
And help me make a difference though work place safety.
Why workplace safety is important to me
I suppose because I have been told that I am a people person and I don’t want to see anyone that I know or care about get injured while working to support their families.
Our policy at work is NOBODY GETS HURT and I do believe that I can & will make a difference with help and support of my friends and work colleagues, because if every ones on the same page every one has the same objective! … And that is to go home in the same condition we arrived at work in.
My plans for national Safe Work Australia Week
At store level we are always doing things to promote safety and to help make people aware.
One of my favourite things is to spot a hazard and to then encourage the team to also spot that hazard; I believe this helps to grow them as a safety team member and also helping them to stay safe.
I have taken on the role of helping to promote safety through the safety team meetings and the programs for safety week that we receive from store support.
The company & I believe that safety is every one’s responsibility. There will be daily topics for us to share with the team and promotional material around the store.
Why I accepted the role as a national Safe Work Australia Week Safety Ambassador
I accepted this role because I want to make a difference at our store, to the company and to every one who hears our message, we all have loved one’s, we are all someone’s mother, father, daughter, son, auntie, uncle, brother or sister, we all have some one who loves us.
Every one deserves the right to go home in the same condition that they came to work.
