Safety Ambassador Sandy Alp
Background information
With a background in nursing, an interest in safety and accident prevention led to a natural progression to workplace health and safety. I was studying for a Bachelor of OHS when I began working as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer for NT WorkSafe. Working for the regulator provided some very valuable training and opportunities for professional development, as well as a different perspective from which to approach safety.
Why workplace safety is important to me
Because I have children who are all old enough to work now. My two boys chose to work in hazardous trades – electrical contractor and a carpenter respectively. Like any parent I want my kids to be able to leave work and go home safely at the end of each working day.
My plans for national Safe Work Australia Week
Encourage all site workers to attend a Tradies Breakfast where they will have the opportunity to learn more about construction induction card training which is about to be implemented in the NT.
Encourage workers to be involved with a Safety Message competition being run by our local radio station.
Hold a morning tea to discuss cyclone preparedness of the work site and encourage workers to discuss any safety concerns or useful suggestions they may have to improve safety on site
Why I accepted the role as a national Safe Work Australia Week Safety Ambassador
Because I genuinely care about worker safety and would like to be instrumental in achieving this goal. I feel that it is important to lead by example and to reward positive behaviour and earnest efforts to be exemplary in safety matters.
