I have enjoyed the various positions that I have held over the years and continue to develop myself by way of further study to maintain my understanding of Health, Safety and the Environment. I am committed to an injury free workplace and my personal opinion is firmly of the belief that all injuries are preventable. I am a very passionate person who is a very dedicated team player.
Lastly, I am a dedicated Husband to my Wife and Father of Six (6) children of various ages. My family is the most important objective in life, hence why Safety is just as important as we all want to go home safely.
Why workplace safety is important to me
My philosophy is that all injuries, industry related diseases and damage are preventable. I continue to work towards eliminating and/or reducing incidents and their severity by applying effective control measures, hazards and risk assessments and actively monitor and audit the performance. This is a fundamental component of the continuous improvement process.
The safety management system for any organisation is designed to influence behaviour through proven systems, training and strong leadership. It creates greater awareness of safe working practices and measures effectiveness by monitoring lead indicators rather than lag indicators.
I understand that the only way to sustain a totally safe working environment is to have a workforce culture where behaving safely is second nature, a ‘core value’.
Having worked in the Worker Compensation area for a number of years I was able to clearly identify the difference of reactive type measures instead of proactive measures. This ultimately lead my down the path of Occupational Health and Safety, with a clear agenda of prevention rather than cure mentality.
My family is the reason as to why I choose to work safely, and if I am able to impart this value upon others especially in the high risk work activities that I work in then and only then will I achieve an injury free workplace.
My plans for national Safe Work Australia Week
My plans for National Safe Work Australia Week will be to develop a National communications framework across our business, to achieve a consistent common communication and focus for our employees on the high frequency; high risk activities that are performed daily within our organisation our “Life Rules”.
A review of past industry fatalities, and significant incidents have identified a series of key potential fatal risks to our people – risks that require the application of clear rules to assist the prevention of significant incidents that could, in slightly different circumstances, result in fatalities.
These mandatory rules, developed in consultation with Senior Management, OHS Committee Members and specialist individuals across our organisation, defined minimum performance expectations for managing these high risk areas.
This communications strategy will develop core information criteria supporting our “Life Rules” and commence during the National Safe Work Australia Week.
Why I accepted the role as a national Safe Work Australia Week Safety Ambassador
I work on the fundamental belief that we all go home safely. I also understand that this message needs to be very clear in our workforce and needs to be communicated regularly. My commitment within this role allows me to constantly provide innovative ways to have our hard working employees move from a compliance driven culture to an engagement culture.
Essentially, I want to make a difference in Safety and accepting the role as Safety Ambassador for the National Safe Work Australia Week, may allow me to engage more personnel within our working environments and continue spreading the message of Safety and its values.
