Safety Ambassador Daniel Sestic
Background information
My name is Daniel Sestic. I have been working in the construction industry for over 15 years and have a background in design. I am a director of WP Projects, an award-winning Sydney based commercial construction company that specialise in project/construction management, fit outs, refurbishment and maintenance.
The business has been operating for over 30 years. Throughout this time WP Projects has aimed to work safely, constantly improve and be ahead of industry trends.
Why workplace safety is important to me
The physically demanding nature of work in the construction industry exposes employees to various forms of injury. At WP we believe that it is everyones right to be able to work in a safe environment and it is our duty to provide the safest work environment possible.
We understand how workplace injuries can impact the lives of our employees and their families. We realise that we are in a position to reduce the likelihood of injuries occurring and believe that all injuries are preventable.
We have implemented a range of solutions including mechanical aids to eliminate or minimise the probability of these injuries occurring. Many of these initiatives have been developed in consultation with WP employees. This lead to the development of a safety culture and high risk solutions within the company that has been embraced by employees.
My plans for national Safe Work Australia Week
My plans for safety week is to continue to promote safety in the workplace on both a company and industry level. We are also working together with Bovis Lend Lease to organise an event to promote safety week on a site level on the 420 George St Project.
Why I accepted the role as a national Safe Work Australia Week Safety Ambassador
I accepted the role of safety ambassador because I believe that safety is good business and should be a priority in the workplace. I would like to encourage both employers and employees in the construction industry to constantly challenge the industry norm and develop safer and innovative ways of performing tasks. Simply because a task has “always been done that way” doesn’t necessarily mean that is the best way. Often as was the case in our company a simple solution was the answer in reducing the chance of injury. The end result was a much safer, happier and more productive workplace for everybody.
